Arts West Updates

April is National Poetry Month, and here we are, sequestered, sheltering in place, practicing social distancing: how can we celebrate poetry together? Join Athens' Poet Laureate Wendy McVicker online Mondays at 10 a.m., on Facebook, for Silver Linings Moments: Wendy will present a poem that she hopes will bring joy and comfort to listeners in these challenging times. A poem is one consciousness speaking to another, one mind, one heart. Thus we connect, one by one, voice to ear to spirit, even when our bodies can't meet.

Everyone is feeling a bit more like a house cat than ever before, as we all shelter in place for the pandemic. What better way to pass the time while connecting to community than to participate in the Cat Art Online Show, produced in partnership with Arts West and Casa Nueva! The show had originally been planned as a two month, two location, in person show at both Arts West and Casa Nueva for the months of April and May. However, this show has 9 lives, and it's new format will hopefully make it even more accessible to the whole community! Please look for updates, as we plan on having information about donating to the Athens Humane Society through this event.

-Create cat art in any medium, and post images of your work to the Cat Art Online Show facebook page.

-Make sure to label your posting with the artist's name, title, and medium(s)

-The deadline to post is Tuesday, May 5th (Cinco de Meow!)

-We plan on hosting gallery shows in 2021, so please hold on to your work for next year's extravaganza!

As we continue to shelter in place, Arts West wants to offer an opportunity for the community to celebrate our beautiful county through photographs! Arts West typically begins accepting photographs for the contest in September, but this year we are opening the submission process early. Go outside and begin the quest for the perfect photo to submit to For the Love of Athens!

For the Love of Athens Submission Guidelines:

For the Love of Athens is a photo exhibit that focuses on images of people, places or things in Athens County. Photographs can be taken with traditional, digital and smart device methods. Any photographic method is welcome! Chosen photographs will be displayed in the For the Love of Athens Exhibit in the Arts West galleries tentatively for the month of February, 2021.

You could win prizes!
Awards go to top 3 photographs chosen by our juror + an audience choice award during the art opening that can be voted on by anyone attending the opening.

Tentative Art Opening - Friday, February 5th, 2021 at 5-7pm
