ABC Players will hold public auditions for “Auntie Mame” on Saturday, March 3, 1-4 p.m. and Sunday, March 4, 5:30-8 p.m., onstage at Stuart's Opera House.  Auditionees do not need to come on both days of the auditions, and you do not need to be a member of ABC Players to audition.

Those who audition should be prepared to read from the script in company with other actors.  Copies of the script are available at the circulation desk in the Athens, The Plains, and Nelsonville branches of the Athens County Public Library.

This cast offers opportunities for actors with a wide range of ages.  Young Patrick and Emory / Michael need to look 8 - 10 years old; Teen Patrick should look 14-ish.  Those auditioning for other roles need to look at least 18.  Each ensemble member will play several roles with a number of costume and makeup changes; the ensemble roles listed have the most time on stage.

The “Auditions” section of the ABC Players Web site ( has links to a role list and downloadable Audition Information Forms to fill out and turn in at the auditions (blank forms will also be available at the auditions).

Regular rehearsals will begin on March 13th and will typically be on Monday through Thursdayevenings leading up to performances at Stuart's Opera House on May 3-5, 2018 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee May 6 at 2 p.m.

“ABC Players” is the nickname of the Athenian Berean Community Players, a local, all-volunteer community theater group that has been enjoying making theater magic since 1973.  Check the “Past Performances” link at to get an idea of the types of shows the group has done and the high production values they maintain.

“Auntie Mame” is the stage adaptation of the novel of the same name by Patrick Dennis.  In the story, a New York socialite becomes the guardian of her young nephew and teaches him to live life to the fullest.  The original Broadway production of the play starred Rosalind Russell, who was nominated for a Tony Award for her portrayal of Mame in the play.  She won an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for her performance in the movie version of the show.

If you have questions about auditions or the play, please contact director Celeste Parsons at  Those interested in technical theater (stage crew, sound, lights, set construction, props, costumes) should come to an audition and make their interests known; no experience required, apprentice training available.
