J.J. Gregg, an Indian Classical Music Sitarist

J.J. Gregg performs Indian classical music on sitar. From calm introspection to energetic exploration, J.J. renders traditional melodies for a universal audience. Question and answer session to follow concert.

About J.J. Gregg!
Born in central Illinois, J.J. Gregg began musical training with the piano at age 8, followed by playing the French horn and piano in school jazz bands and orchestras, and years of writing and performing with his experimental rock band.  In 2000, Gregg moved to Pune, India on a study abroad program and met internationally renowned sitar player Ustad Usman Khan. For the past fourteen years he has studied sitar under Khan at Naad Mandir, traveling to back to Pune seven times.  In August 2013, Gregg came back from a year studying and living in Pune and Mumbai, India.  Prior to this trip, J.J. Gregg lived in Athens for three years, working with Kids on Campus, the Westside Community Garden, and developing a passion for growing garlic.  Gregg has performed in the US, India, and Thailand. 

Midnight Madness at ARTS/West

Ohio University Masters of Fine Arts playwriting students will receive a theme at the beginning of the week and then will write, cast, and rehearse several three minute plays based on that theme, style or concept. The plays will then be performed, script in hand on Friday evening at 11PM. Most weeks this occurs at The Hahne Theater in Kantner Hall on campus. But occasionally the playwrights will switch venues and bring "Midnight Madness" to ARTS/West! Event is FREE and will take place on Friday, February 14th at 11:00pm.

Water Colors Winter Workshop

Join Missy Whaley for her Winter Workshop, Water Colors. The workshop will take place on Thursday, February 6th from 630-830pm. This class is a mediation working with water colors that are made from plants. The participants will move through exercises exploring their relationship with color and form.

A reading of The Shared Wife by Merri Biechler!

The Shared Wife is a comedy about the people we love and the chicken we eat.  Merri Biechler is the author of An Appalachian Christmas Carol.

Natalie McKenzie runs a small company that records audio books. Her co-owners and housemates are her husband, and his brother. After a passionate kiss with her brother-in-law, Natalie is determined to save her marriage. And help is on the way!  The threesome signs Cherry, author of A Recipe for Marriage, poised to be the next self-help megastar.  But Natalie can’t choose which brother she wants to be married to. And then there’s the dilemma of the live chicken.  That tasty, tasty chicken.

This class will focus on different grades of drawing pencils, shading, format, contrast composition and more.

Unlike Yoga or Tai Chi, Missy Whaley offers a Stretch and Movement class that integrates stretching, simple motion and relaxation! This is also a perfect class for the changing/aging body for ages 40 and up.

Federal Hocking High School Art Opening!

Art Opening for the third annual juried exhibit, 8x10 Photo Project THIS Friday, January 10th from 6-9pm. Hung on the walls of our performance space will showcase photographic works by local student artists from Federal Hocking High School. 
This is a FREE event with refreshments.
Musical entertainment will also be provided by Federal Hocking students!

Athens Rock Camp for Girls Benefit Concert

The Athens Rock Camp for Girls and ARTS/West will be presenting a benefit concert on Saturday, January 18th.
Doors will open at 6:30 pm for mingling with the campers, volunteers and friends as well as t-shirt sales from past Rock Camps, which are made by the campers throughout the week-long camp. Suggested donation of 5$ at the door.

The concert in the recently renovated Performance Space will start at 7:00pm and will feature Mary Naly, Roxie, Ameena and Allyriane Huq, The Fury, Raggamuffin and Dweeb.

Public Talk by the Venerable Tibetan Buddhist Lama, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche

Wednesday, January 15th, the Athens KTC Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Center is hosting this talk by a high-ranking Tibetan lama by the name of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, who is the Abbot of the Buddhist monastery in Woodstock, New York.

Khenpo Karthar is coming to give a basic introductory talk about Tibetan Buddhism, especially regarding "
Spiritual Tradition and Its Relevance Today", geared to the general public.

The event begins at 7:00 pm. Suggested donation of 5$ is appreciated.
