December Art Opening Featuring Aaron Smith

Untitled 4, Athens Alley Series by Aaron Smith

Opening Night

The exhibit will hang until January 5, 2015.
Artist Statement:

“My paintings are open to perceptions that exist in the subconscious mind of the viewer, while simultaneously being a direct expression of my own perceptions.

My use of traditional art mediums, oils on canvas, requires the viewer to address the space differently than photography. Though my paintings are strongly representational, the challenge and questioning of “real” is more persistent with representational painting over the perception of truth in photography. I try to coax extended attention from the viewer by creating a formal composition with no direct focal point. My even- handed treatment of the surface, plus a compositionally dynamic movement of shape and line are intended to aid in this. I have been increasing the size of my canvases in an attempt to force a physically engaging size and shape with the viewer’s body. I wish to create an environment that is semi experiential- I wish for the viewer to feel as if she can enter the space.” ~ Aaron Smith

ARTS/West Presents a Play Reading, "Home is a Passing Feeling" by Karina Cochran

JULY 31st @ 8pm

"Home is a Passing Feeling" by Karina Cochran
When a drought hits the American homeland in a serious way, a variety of artists and community members struggle over the idea of a future in a world without water. From a famous sculptor, to a graffiti artist, to a college drop out, each has their own particular method of coping; using their talents (if not to save the world) then to at least to ease its pain.

Karina Cochran is a tall glass of water from the Midwest. She attended Interlochen Arts Academy and graduated from Bennington College in Vermont in 2010. She is inspired by tactile art, the collective unconscious, human conflict, and the fact that everything is made of water. She started writing this play during a 37 day drought, and finished it while living on a sand dune. She has participated in Atlanta's Horizon Theatre New Playwrights Festival, and New York's Sanguine Theatre Playwright's Festival.

FREE Play Reading TUESDAY May 20th at 8pm - "Tammy Faye's Final Audition" ~ by Merri Biechler

Brick Monkey Theater Ensemble – Free Play Reading Series
In her professional acting career, Shelley Delaney has portrayed Joan of Arc and Lady Macbeth. But there was always one person she wanted to tackle: Tammy Faye Bakker. Most people know Tammy Faye as the wife of disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker and for her extravagant makeup. But Tammy Faye had a way of staying in front of the camera throughout her life; her final appearance on Larry King Live in 2007 took place hours before her death from colon cancer.

“I had always been fascinated by Tammy Faye Bakker, even in graduate school when I stumbled onto the PTL club quite by accident,” Ms. Delaney explained. “The theatricality, seeming innocence, and lack of irony riveted me. But it wasn’t until her final interview with Larry King that I got the notion I wanted to explore (as an actor) what made her tick as a human being.”

Ms. Delaney had worked with playwright Merri Biechler in the past, directing her play “An Appalachian Christmas Carol” and acting in her play “Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver.” But Ms. Biechler had never written a role specifically for Ms. Delaney. “We’re good friends, and I trust her theatrical instincts completely. When she said she wanted to play Tammy Faye, I said okay! Then the real work began of digging through documents and hours of video research to find the story beneath the fa├žade.”

Ms. Delaney agrees. “I’m struck with Tammy Faye’s apparent authenticity, her unflappable nature, and of course the mask of makeup. What's behind it all? I’m only beginning to have a hint, which is what makes it so appealing and challenging.”

A first draft of the play entitled “Tammy Faye’s Final Audition” will be presented as part of Brick Monkey Theater Ensemble’s Free Play Reading Series at 8pm on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at ARTS/West, 132 W. State Street, Athens, OH. Admission is free. The reading is directed by Dennis Lee Delaney and features Shelley Delaney in the title role and David Haugen as multiple roles including Jim Bakker. The play is supported by an Ohio University College of Fine Arts Creative Research Award.

“Brick Monkey audiences are very supportive of new play development,” Ms. Biechler explained.  “Our audience gets the chance to see this very early draft and have the opportunity to watch two talented actors craft their roles. It’s an exciting process!”

Brick Monkey Theater Ensemble is generously supported by the Ohio Arts Council, the Kleinpenny Educational Fund, the Athens Foundation, the O’Bleness Foundation, and the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

ART EXHIBITION at ARTS/West - Adam Lindner: More Than Sculptures and Stuff

132 W. State St. Athens, OH

Adam Lindner:

More Than Sculptures
and Stuff

May 2nd – May 28th, 2014

Opening May 2nd, 6-8 P.M.

ARTS/West is pleased to present More Than Sculptures and Stuff, a solo exhibition of new work by Adam Lindner. Please join us on Friday May 2nd, from 6-8 p.m., for the exhibition opening and to meet the artist.
In the exhibition, Adam Lindner presents a series or unfamiliar artworks to most viewers who may expect to see his plain-air landscape paintings.  “It’s time that I release these works” said Lindner, “mostly because they are taking up work space in my studio.”
Lindner’s installation is comprised of wall-hung sculptures that are sophisticated without flamboyance. His sculptures; One, Flattened Metal Table and Wicker Chair are two examples of the unexpected work to be presented this month. The works in MORE THAN SCULPTURE AND STUFF are flattering without being pretentious and are a must see for anyone wanting more than a pretty picture.
Adam Lindner is an Athens-based artist who has exhibited painting, installations, and videos nationally. His work was recently included in shows associated with the Dairy Barn Art Center and the Athens Public Library. He has had solo exhibitions at the creative gallery in Cincinnati and has participated in group exhibitions at the Dairy Barn (Athens), the Creative Gallery, the Pearlman Gallery, Convergys Gallery, Chidlaw Gallery and the Mnt. Adams Top of the Hill Gallery (Cincinnati).
