Humble Play Festival Returns Oct. 17th - 19th!

Hear Ye! Hear ye!

Humble Play Revisited: New Play Festival of Appalachian Ohio
Featuring Some Favorites From Previous Years

The Humble Play: New Play Festival of Appalachian Ohio returns for its eighth year and is being held from Thursday, October 17 through Saturday, October 19, 2013.

All performances start at 7:00 pm and are held at ARTS/West, at 132 W. State St. in Athens, Ohio
The mission of the Humble Play is to promote the art of playwriting while introducing the process of new play development to an audience. This is achieved by inviting playwrights to submit their plays to a committee of judges. These judges choose plays to be produced as staged readings for the general public as a once a year, three day festival. A moderated talk-back is traditionally held following each reading, where audience members can discuss how well the storyline came together for them.

Oct. 17, 2013 7:00 pm – Staged reading of Romeo and Juliet: There Hasn’t Been a Rap Song Yet by Rheal Radwany of Athens, Ohio

Oct. 18, 2013 7:00 pm – Staged reading of Her Summer Fling by Merri Biechler of Athens, Ohio

Oct. 19, 2013 7:00 pm – Staged reading of Dignity by Celeste Parsons of Nelsonville, Ohio

Each selected play will be presented as a staged reading. All of the plays in this year’s festival have been past festival choices. A committee re-read the plays that were presented in past years and chose these three. We are proud to announce that all three playwrights are from Athens County this year.

A reading is defined as actors presenting words of a script, using scripts-in-hand. Each reading will be kept extremely simple so that the playwright's words can be the focus of the event.

All events are free and open to the public and begin at 7:00 pm. Donations to the festival are encouraged.

Many thanks to the Ohio Arts Council and the Humble Play planning committee for making the festival possible.

CATS, A Fine Arts Exhibition

"From the dawn of time, cats have fascinated artists. Beloved by Hemmingway and despised by the inquisition, cats have adapted to life among humans without compromising their wild nature. Their fuzzy faces represent an eternal existentialist struggle of animal instinct for freedom against the comforts of modern society.
This exhibition represents nine Ohio artists who have a compulsion to create work inspired by their feline companions. Ranging from installation art to painting, they brave the contemporary arts world refusing to give up their live for kitsch aesthetic while revolutionizing our understanding of reality"
Anna Tararova -,

This Friday, June 7th @ 6pm-9pm, come by ARTS/West for this awesome Art exhibit all centered around the internet's favorite animal, The Cat. With pieces ranging from the bizarre, to the beautiful, and even the down right enlightening, be sure to stop by to see it in it's full glory! This exhibit will be up between Friday the 7th, all the way till Friday, June 28th. So even if you cannot make it to the opening, be sure to stop by at any time to give it a look and show your support for local art! See you then!

ARTS/West will be recieving $15,000 in upgrades!

Following the success of Mark Kelso's performance last night, we've been given some great news. The recent goal that we've been pushing for has finally come to fruition as we're being granted $15,000 in upgrades!

These upgrades consist of: Replacing the pews with 170 new performance grade seats, removing the old carpet to show the nice hard wood beneath that will also be sanded and resurfaced, and finally we will install a removable drape and pipe for the stage.

We're immensely excited for these changes, and I'm not being modest in saying that none of it would be possible without the wonderful supporters that we have. Thank you all so much, and I can't wait to show you the space after the changes have taken place!
