Arts West Events and Programs are Currently in a Holding Pattern
Arts West is Closed to the Public Until Further Notice

Hello Arts West Friends and Supporters,

In light of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, the recommendations made by the CDC and the State of Ohio, and the response of the City of Athens, it is necessary for Arts West to close its doors for the time being.

The following previously advertised March 2020 events have been cancelled or postponed as noted:
-Cat Art Show Call for Art- We'll no longer be having people drop off their work. This event will be transformed into a virtual show, in partnership with Casa Nueva, in which folks will photograph and post their Cat Art. More info will be forthcoming.
-Square Dance Social and Jam of Thursday, March 19CANCELLED
-Drum Circle Music Jam of Friday, March 20: CANCELLED
-Amethystone Album Release Party of Saturday, March 21
POSTPONED - New Date TBA
-The Cat's Pajamas Clothing Exchange of Thurs-Sat, March 26-28: POSTPONED- New Dates TBA

NOTE: Our April 2020 events will likely also be cancelled or postponed. Info on our blogspot Home page and Upcoming Events page, as well as our Facebook page will be updated regularly.

Weekly Classes & Activities on hold until further notice:
-Self Care, Healing & Protection - Mondays, 6-7:15pm (Free for Veterans)
-SATB Choir Rehearsal - Tuesdays, 5:00-6:15pm (Sept - May)
-ITS Bellydance (Improvisational Team Style) w/Eliot - Tuesdays, 6-7pm
-West African Drum - Tuesdays, 7-9pm
-Tribal Fusion Belly Dancing, Wednesdays - 7:15-8:15pm (Sept 19 - Dec 19)

Youth & Children's Programs on hold:
-PRISM LGBTQ Youth Arts Program - Mondays (when ACSD is in session), 3-5:30pm. Arts West is not able to host this program until the schools have re-opened. Organizers are currently planning the next action steps to continue providing support for the students in different ways. For more info please email:

-Afternoon Arts Classes for Kids (K-5) - Monday-Thursday (when ACSD is in session), 3:45-5:15pm. Arts West is not able to continue this program until the schools have re-opened. Anyone who has already paid for Spring session will be refunded for dates that we're not able to have the classes.

In addition, the SEO Musical Lending LIbrary will not be open during this time (usually open Tues/Thurs 2-7pm). If you currently have an instrument out on loan you may hang on to it for the time being. Please email us if you're moving or have another extenuating circumstance in which you need to return an instrument before we're able to re-open.

We're grateful for all the ways in which this community embraces and supports Arts West as a gathering place for the arts in this town. And we'll miss seeing everybody!

Job Openings at Arts West- The City of Athens is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Program Coordinator for Arts West. This is a part-time position at the Arts West facility of the City of Athens, Arts, Parks and Recreation Department. Knowledge in theater, music, and/or visual arts and experience with community customer service preferred. Hours will include nights and weekends.

Thursday, March 19, 6-9pm: Third Thursday Square Dance Social & Jam. Caller Joe Burdock and band the Possum Queens will offer an evening of lively old time music. All levels welcome. No partner needed. Come dance or stop in just to listen. Bring friends, a good attitude & a beverage of choice (with valid 21+ ID). Open String Jam at 6pm, followed by Dancing 7-9pm. $6 Suggested Donation. Friday, March 20, 8-10:45pm: Finale Drum & Music Jam. A night of drumming & dancing, open to all levels & ages. The circle is not limited to drums. Any and all acoustic instruments are welcome. Put the worry of your days away and become one with the rhythm. Whether you drum, dance or just listen and take it in, there is a place here for everyone. If you've never played an instrument, feel free to borrow one and participate in the sound!  $5-$10 Suggested Donation. Saturday, April 25, 7pm: Amethystone - Album Release Party & Charity Art Auction. It's an Amethystone album release celebration for “The Alchemist”! Featuring special guest DJ and Emcee, B-Funk Brandon Thompson. Come out and hear "The Alchemist" performed in its entirety! Local Artists Chris Monday, Kasey Jones, and the Passion Works Crew will be on hand creating original works of art, including a collaborative piece with which all can participate, to be auctioned off to benefit Stuart's Opera House, Live Healthy Appalachia, and Passion Works. Free Admission & Refreshments! Volunteer Schedule
Thursday, March 5, 6-8pm: 1st Thursday Old Time String Jam. In the parking lot or basement of Arts West depending on the weather, a beginners' style slow string jam with a special guest "leader" each month. The leader will play, call chords and help new players follow along. Bring your own instrument or borrow one from the musical lending library. All levels & ages welcome. BYOB (w/valid 21+ ID). Sunday, March 8, 2-4:30pm: OPEN Movement Workshop. Join Cleveland-based performance artist and movement educator Marcia Custer for a workshop open to all. OPEN Movement is a judgement-free, individually-centered, therapeutic class. It's a place to stretch, strengthen, and center your mind, body, and creative practice. Includes a range of somatic techniques. OPEN Movement holds space for and celebrates all bodies, all levels, all identities, always! This month, the workshop will be focused on individual movement education and structured play with others! Fee: $20. Register by emailing marciaicuster@gmail.com. Capacity is limited, but a certain number of folks need to be registered in order for the workshop to happen. More Info @ Athens Workshop: OPEN Movement + Play
  
Arts West is HIRING for PART-TIME positions!
The 2020 Cat's Pajamas Clothing Exchange Benefit for Arts West is currently seeking volunteers! Below is a list of available shifts for the event preparation, the actual event, and the cleanup.
Available Volunteer Shift Dates & Times:
Sunday March 22nd: 5-8pm
Monday March 23rd: 6-9pm
Tuesday March 24th: 2-5pm
Wednesday March 25th: 5-8pm
Thursday March 26th: 5-8pm
Friday March 27th: 5-8:30pm
Saturday March 28th: 9am-12pm, 12-3pm, 3-6pm
Sunday March 29th: 11am-2pm

Please email our 2020 CPJ Volunteer Coordinator Aspen Handy with a few shifts that will work for you (in order of preference) at aspenjhandy@gmail.com. She'll then send you a confirmation email with the time(s) you're scheduled to volunteer. A reminder email will be sent a few days before your shift date(s) as well. Note: If you wish to come to the exchange at times other than your shift, you must pay entry, and follow customer rules.

Clothing exchange donations are currently being accepted at Arts West, Mon-Fri 11am-6pm (call for additional hours). Drop-off by Thursday the 26th to receive a golden ticket.
