SEOTDS March Contra Dancing

Come to ARTS/West on Friday, March 11th for the monthly SEOTDS Contra Dance. The dancing will take place from 8-11 pm with a beginner's lesson at 7:30 pm. No experience? No partner? No problem! Adriane Mohlenkamp will be calling the action with music provided by The Wireless Ramblers. Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for students, and $15 for the whole family. Front and Center featuring Celia and Charlie Lewis

Cat's Pajamas Clothing Exchange





Starting now through March 17th bring your unwanted clothes to ARTS/West during business hours to receive a “golden ticket” that allows you to take unlimited items on the exchange days. A massive amount of clothing will be available during the exchange. If you bring clothes on the days of the exchange, you will get a “regular” ticket, & you may take as many items as you brought, additional items $1. Entry is $15 on Friday, March 18th, $10 on the 19th, & $5 on the 20th. Once entry is paid, you may return to the event as many times as you want. (entry only paid once.) Admission is free for children 12 & under!

Zumba at ARTS/West!


This exciting class provides a full body workout including cardio, toning, and strength training. Light hand weights (1 to 2 pounds) will be incorporated into all classes, through the use of hand weights is always optional for all students. If you are ready for a fitness challenge, the join our classes. The goal of the instructor is to provide a full body workout that will give you results. Get ready to party yourself into shape! This exhilarating, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie burning dance fitness-party (TM) will move YOU!
Instructor, Carolyn Ervin has been a fitness instructor for over 20 years. Carolyn has taught aerobics, strength and toning classes with the YMCA in Tennessee and is certified as a Reebok Step Aerobics Instructor and Strength trainer. Carolyn has been certified to teach Zumba since 2010 and has recently received certification to teach Zumba toning.
DATES: Every Monday & Wednesday, 5:30-6:30pm

     We all have stories to tell. Stories about people, events, and places that are important to us. They document our life and form our and our family’s histories. Learn to tell your stories creatively. Beginning with simple subject matter on a 2D surface, then we will move to more complex story telling ranging from the straight forward to conceptual themes. A variety of techniques, materials, textures and formats will be covered.
     In the first session, I will bring a variety of materials for participants to explore and experiment with. Sources for materials will be discussed.

Bio
     Connaught Cullen grew up in Clyde, Ohio, worked at Whirlpool Corp for 30 years, then had a mid-life crisis and became an artist. She received a BFA from Bowling Green State University and an MA-Studio from Eastern Michigan University. She recently received her MFA in the Painting + Drawing department at Ohio University where she received multiple awards and grants. Cullen has participated in numerous exhibits, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, she taught for many years in college settings, and is a member of Starbrick Gallery in Nelsonville, Ohio. She resides in Southeast Ohio in the Appalachian landscapes that she has come to love.

Landscape Painting Class beginning March 2

Landscape Painting
Six Week Class
Wednesdays, March 2 - April 6

We will explore the elements of design to build compelling landscapes. Participants may choose between oil, acrylic or watercolor. Different approaches and techniques will be covered to find what works best for you. Beginning with a simple landscape of the instructor’s choosing, we will then move to more personal landscapes.
Topics to be covered:
1 color theory,
2 techniques
3 creating depth through perspective, scale, value, repetition of form, color and value
4 working from photos
5 non-conventional painting supplies

Tai Chi Class beginning February 27

Tai Chi Easy/ Qi Gong



Class Description
This class is designed to introduce you to Tai Chi and Qi Gong in a gentle, fun, and relaxed way. Posture, breathing, and movement are all covered on the first day. The classes consist of a warm up, Qi Gong(movement, breathing exercises, self-massage techniques, meditation), and Tai Chi Easy. It can be done sitting or standing. Tai Chi walking is taught for those who are able and ready. This class has been shown to improve your balance, develop mobility, improve focus, enhance immune function, and more. If you want to learn a new way to move your body, improve your focus, and learn to prevent disease then this class is for you!
Professional Biography
Jameson Platt is a dedicated student and teacher of the Qi cultivation arts. He started his journey into this mysterious world of Qi Gong and Tai Chi in March 2013. He found a teacher in his hometown of Athens, Ohio and realized it was what he had been looking for. In September 2013, Jameson started his teaching journey when he attended the first of three levels of a teacher training in the Qi cultivation arts with the Institute of Integral Qi Gong and Tai Chi lead by Dr. Roger Jahnke. Jameson has found great joy in sharing this ancient wisdom with anyone who wants to learn and hopes to continue helping others learn how to care for themselves with these healing arts.
Class Outline
During the course of this 9 week class, we will be starting with some basic Tai Chi principles such as posture, how to move, breath, and mind focus. Every class will include some Qi Gong to warm up followed by Tai Chi movements which can be done standing or even sitting for ease of learning. For those who are able, Tai Chi walking will be introduced after all movements are learned standing. By week 9, students will be able to perform the whole form whether it be moving, sitting, or standing.
