5:30-7:30pm

We will be learning Yankadi and Macru, dances from western Africa. These dances are usually done together on the full moon. Yankadi is a slower exciting dance with a swinging drum beat. Macru picks up the tempo up a little and finishes the dance leaving you full of energy. These classes are great for beginners and those that have taken classes before. Dancing is great for your mind, body and soul. This event will allow you to meet others in the drum and dance community of Southern Ohio. It will also shed some light on cultural traditions from Africa's golden past.

$15/adult, $10/student

Instructors: Dance - C C Ruchti, Drum - Lawrence R Greene

ARTS/West & Women of Appalachia Presents the 7th Annual Women Speak

ARTS/West Presents is pleased to host the 7th Annual Women of Appalachia Project (WOAP) “Women Speak” performance, an evening of juried poetry, story and song, featuring artists from throughout Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. The event will be held in the performance space on October 22, 2015, at 6pm.

The mission of WOAP is to showcase the way in which female artists respond to the Appalachian region as a source of inspiration, bringing together women from diverse backgrounds, ages and experiences to embrace the stereotype – to show the whole woman; beyond the superficial factors that people use to judge her.

The work of seventeen spoken word artists, poets, storytellers and musicians, will be performed at five separate venues throughout Ohio; first up at ARTS/West, 132 W. State Street, Athens. In November several WOAP artists will present at the esteemed Columbus Poetry Forum, Bossy Girls on High Street. Sips Coffee House, Mt. Vernon will host a December Saturday afternoon presentation; The Bowen House in Logan in March 2015; and a performance at The Pump House Fine Arts Center, Chillicothe, will close out the season in May 2016.

“I am so pleased that this eclectic group of locations have been offered up to host this season’s “Women Speak” events, allowing this assemblage of spoken art to be heard potentially by hundreds of folks in the respective communities,” says founder curator Kari Gunter-Seymour.” Over the past 7 years, ARTS/West has been an important partner of WOAP. We are grateful for the support and encouragement provided by the excellent staff and volunteers.

When asked how living in Appalachia has influenced her life and therefore her art, Kentucky poet Barbara Biggs says, “I spent a lot of time trying to run away from these hills and valleys. I moved places, worked other places, but ultimately, always ended up right back here, within view of the Ohio River and the Indian mounds and persimmon trees. There are so many things I love about Appalachia: the complexity of the people, the feeling that I am never far from a maple tree, and that feeling in spring when the hills are pure green and everything just feels right.”

“Throughout my childhood, my grandmothers made sure I had access to stories and books and songs and instruments,” shares West Virginia writer, Jamie Bailey. I spent my days at each of their homes, pulling carrots from the earth, apples from branches, climbing in their trees, and inspecting their rosebushes. The Appalachian homes that hosted my childhood became playgrounds for my very colorful imagination.”

7th Annual Women of Appalachia Project “Women Speak”
ARTS/West
132 W State St, Athens, OH 45701
Thursday, October 22, 2015 @ 6pm

Doors open at 5:30pm. The presentation is free to the public through donations in support of WOAP and ARTS/West will be taken at the door. There will be a short reception immediately following the performance. Refreshments will be served.

ARTS/West is turning 10!

And we need your help!

ARTS/West has made it to a milestone - 10 years of bringing the arts to our community!  In celebration, we are planning a 3 day extravaganza of performances, dedications, food, and visual art on August 14, 15, and 16, 2015. So mark your calendars!

If you are able and interested, we would love to have you perform, show your art, volunteer, or help provide cookies or punch!

We are asking visual artists to exhibit pieces in the facility both upstairs and down.  The 1st 18 2D pieces offered will be hung in the gallery space - the rest will be in the basement on easels.  3D pieces will be in the basement only since we are unsure as to what performances will be like upstairs and are afraid to have to move art for them.  The pieces downstairs will not be up longer than just the weekend event due to the inability to make them secure for the entire month.

We are planning to give each performer a 30 minute span of time to perform with 30 minute breaks in between acts  (this is subject to change if a performer/group cannot fit their piece into a 30 minute block).  We do not have set times yet as we want to see how many performances we have before we set a schedule.  There will be performances in both the performance space and the basement - times will be offset so attendees will have a chance to see something upstairs and then go downstairs right away to see something else.  At least that is the idea at this point.

Along with performers and artists, we are also seeking volunteers to help make sure the event runs smoothly. In addition, we're asking people to donate 2 dozen cookies (or more!) or punch ingredients in order to offer something sweet for attendees and participants.

The weekend will also include a dedication to Bob Winters as well as the community. We hope you are able to be a part of this celebration!

If you or someone you know would be interested in contributing to this celebrationplease email Kelly at kellygreenmantle@gmail.com or call 740/592-4315.

Thank you!
