Insurgent Theatre comes to ARTS/West

Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 8:00pm.

In the belly is where things digest, where they are broken down so their value can be extracted. This is where things are made to rot. If our society is a beast, it's belly is the prison system. This new work from Insurgent Theatre seeks to manifest imprisonment on stage, overlays it with critical analysis of the system, and follows up with in-depth discussion about abolishing prison in America.

Created in workshop by Weslie Coleman, Kate Pleuss, and Ben Turk, with assistance from Harmony Bench and Rebecca Riley.

Touring the US in 2011. Raising funds for RedBird Prison Abolition. Supporting prisoners in Ohio.

This show contains nudity, violence and other sad realities of the US prison system.

Stuart's Opera House presents Shovels & Rope at ARTS/West

Stuart's Opera House presents Shovels & Rope at ARTS/West in Athens
Stuart's Opera House is presenting a very special show with South Carolina's Shovels & Rope at ARTS/West in Athens, Ohio. The concert takes place Wednesday, August 17th at 8:00pm at ARTS/West, 132 West State Street in Athens, Ohio. Tickets are on sale right now by calling (740) 753-1924 or clicking HERE or, visiting the Stuart’s website at www.stuartsoperahouse.org.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Less is more. Make it work with what you've got. 2 Guitars, a junkyard drum kit (harvested from an actual garbage heap- adorned with tamborines, flowers and kitchen rags), a handful of harmonicas, voices, and above all.. songs. Cary Ann Hearst & Michael Trent prefer to keep it simple. They have cleverly managed to take 3 separate recording projects and combine them into 1 cohesive, folk rock, sloppy tonk, harmonized, loose but tight, streamlined audience killing machine. Michael Trent (Texas/Colorado) has just released his second solo album entitled "The Winner", and Cary Ann Hearst (Mississippi/Tennessee) is about to release her second record "Lions & Lambs". Together hey have one duo release "Shovels & Rope" which was came out in 2008 and are currently working on the follow up "Shovels & Rope V.2" in their house, van, and backyard. At the shows, expect to hear a little something from any or all of these releases - while the duo switch instruments and share lead vocal duties. Also prepare to rethink your definition of a live rock band.

Stuart’s Opera House presents Shovels & Rope at ARTS/West (132 West State Street in Athens, Ohio) on Wednesday, August 17th at 8:00pm. Tickets are on sale now! General admission tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. For more information and tickets call (740) 753-1924 or visit the website at www.stuartsoperahouse.org.

W.R. Smiddie: Memorial Celebration

On Sunday, August 21st from 1-3 PM at ARTS/West there will be an open Memorial Celebration for our dear friend W. R. Smiddie. The memorial will feature: remembrances, music, pottery, and theater. An open mic will be available at some point.

Participants who own a piece of his pottery are encouraged to bring it and place it with others on the apron of the stage.

Following the the tradition of play readings at his home, the family asks that as possible you please bring a dessert or appetizer to share at the reception that will follow in the basement area.
