Barbez, unclassifiable icons of the downtown New York scene, weave a haunting mosaic of old-world cabaret, Eastern European folksong, contemporary classical and experimental rock into a uniquely beautiful and personal soundscape. With their unconventional lineup mixing a rock rhythm section and theremin, clarinet, and classical percussion, one can hear echoes of such like-minded musical iconoclasts as Kurt Weill, Godspeed, you black emperor! and Russian composer Alfred Schnittke.

The band is currently comprised of the following musicians: Pamelia Kurstin (theremin) who has performed and recorded widely with numerous artists including John Zorn, David Byrne, and Jim Thirlwell (Foetus). She appears in the documentary Moog, giving a theremin lesson to electronics pioneer Bob Moog. Dan Kaufman (guitar) also performs with downtown New York chanteuse Rebecca Moore and avant-vocalist Shelley Hirsch and is the Barbez’s main songwriter; Peter Hess (clarinet) plays with a variety of groups including the Slavic-inspired Balkan Beat Box and World/Inferno Friendship Society; Andrew Jones (bass, electronics); John Bollinger (drums) is a West Coast native who plays for numerous groups including Antony and the Johnsons and the Sway Machinery.

Barbez has recorded four albums all of them engineered and mixed by the incomparable Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, John Zorn). Recently the band released it’s fourth album, Force of Light, on John Zorn’s Tzadik label under bandleader Dan Kaufman’s name. The album was inspired and uses the poetry of the great Romanian-Jewish poet, Paul Celan. Barbez also has a long-standing collaboration with the experimental theatre pioneer, John Jesurun, appearing frequently in Jesurun’s long-running avant-soap opera, Chang in a Void Moon. For the past decade, Barbez has been a constant and vibrant part of the New York music scene and the group tours frequently across the U.S. and Europe. Over the years Barbez has been privileged to perform with a wide variety of artists including Cat Power, Sun Ra Arkestra, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, MC5, Devendra Banhart, the Dresden Dolls, Faun Fables, and the Angels of Light.

The band is currently at work on two forthcoming records, one for Tzadik inspired by ancient Roman-Jewish melodies and another about the wars in the Middle East since 9/11.
