Weekend of Free Children's Events

ARTS/West, 132 W. State St. invites you to shake away the winter blahs and join us this weekend for 2 FREE children events.

March 5 at 7:00pm join us for Last Minute Panic Productions' performance of Thumbelina, The story of a Brave Little Girl.

And, on March 7, from 3:00pm-5:00pm the The Community Assistant Program with the Off- Campus Living Office at Ohio University will host a FREE craft and game day.

Thumbelina, The story of a Brave Little Girl is adapted by Liza Lentini based on the story by Hans Christian Anderson and is a FREE 30 minute production for the whole family.

One morning, Mama's dearest wish is granted when a rosebud opens and Thumbelina, the tiniest, loveliest and bravest of girls, emerges. Thumbelina and Mama are very happy until a Froggy Mama kidnaps Thumbelina, intending for her to marry her boorish, burpy son. With a big dose of bravery, and a little help from a friendly Beetle, Thumbelina escapes on a lily pad across the water.

Her adventure continues when a hungry Spider captures her. It takes all of her wits, and a bit of help from the audience, for Thumbelina to break free from the web. She next befriends an injured Sparrow who teaches her the value of sharing your time and to appreciate new food (gummy worms!). As the Sparrow heals under Thumbelina's care, a storm of clouds descends. Thinking quickly, Thumbelina enlists the audience's help in blowing the clouds away, and she and the now healthy Sparrow fly home to a joyful Mama.

With just four actors playing twelve roles, this whirlwind production is high energy, calling upon the help of the audience to make sure Thumbelina finds her way home. The bright costumes and minimal set encourage a child's imagination. Yet with enough jokes for the adults to appreciate, this production is sure to leave the audience laughing and wishing that they too could defeat a blood sucking mosquito or fly high above the clouds on the back of a sparrow.

Thumbelina, The story of a Brave Little Girl will be presented at ARTS/West on at 7:00pm and is Friday, March 5, 2010 FREE and open to the public.

Then join us on Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 3:00pm-5:00pm for a Craft and Game Day presented by The Community Assistant Program with the Off- Campus Living Office at Ohio University to increase the relationship between student's and community members.

For their Winter Community Service activity, the CA's of the West Side Neighbors wanted to reach out to ARTS/West and provide a special activities day for the children of the West Side. They hope that this event will increase the relationship between the West Side members and Ohio University.

The event will take place on Sunday March 7 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm FREE at ARTS/West. Around four CA's will be there to help children with crafts and play games. If you are interested in attending the Craft and Game day please call the office so we can be prepared for you! (740) 592-4315.

We hope many community members come join us!
