I got the pre Artoberfest jitters......

This week is my pre-Artoberfest weekend, today I made raffle tickets, called artists, and sent out e-mails. Things are looking good for the weekend, lots of music for the stage, quite a selection of styles, and lots of artists responded to the gallery space. If people start bringing in thier work tomorrow we will get right on to hanging it.

How many of you are here (at the blog) because of the Athena Grand website???? I use that website all of the time for checking movies, it is so great that they are making advertising space available to the community. We can see if we are getting more hits because of the stat counter but it would be nice to know if you are comming from the website link......
Later today the Actors Movable Theatre will be moving in to ARTS/West to start techs for Broadway Babylon. Lots of local celebrities in that one, I don't know how Robin Barnes will hold out with a stage show at night and a radio show in the morning.. Come on down and see the show, should be a load of fun.

Remember that there are directions to ARTS/West listed in an earlier blog ( when this blog was just a baby) so just click on over here next weekend and see whats happening.

SAVE THE DATES
Quilt Discovery: November 11th Athens County Quilt Discovery: Members of the public are invited to bring their quilts- and share their stories for an oral history project-to ARTS/West, where quilt and textile experts Ellice Ronsheim and Leslie Floyd will examine them and offer information about their patterns, fabrics, and styles. While all quilts are welcome, those made before 1950 and have a connection to the Athens County Region-either brought here or made by a resident-will have precedence; we will however look at as many quilts as time allows. For each quilt, a quilt history form will be filled out and a documentation label attached. Please call 592-4315 to register in advance.

For a complete listing of classes, workshops and meetings please call our office during office hours of 1-4 at (740) 592-4315.

Angels & Wings: Community Dance Project Explores “Close to Death” Experiences

The Athens community is invited to participate in the creation of a dance theatre piece investigating close to death experiences. Through intensive oral history work, video and dance, participants will develop a relationship with a community member who has had an experience with death, and will create a solo work to be woven into a final evening-length piece to be performed in the spring.

“Close to death” is meant to be interpreted according to the subject’s point of view. For example: Has someone you love had cancer? Has your lifetime pet passed away? Have you been to war? Have you been with someone as they died? Anyone seeking to express their creative voice or share their story is welcome to participate. Experience is not necessary.

Potluck rap sessions and video and dance workshops are offered throughout the months of October and November at ARTS/West, and are open to the public, including those not involved in the project.

“Angels and Wings” is presented in partnership with ARTS/West, Athens Friends Meeting and the Athens community. Funding by Athens Foundation, ARTS West and the Ohio Arts Council.

About Missy Whaley: Since 1989 when Melissa Whaley started her dance company, MinDCollision, her intention has been to bring art and the artistic process directly to communities. She has created several solos, duets, and trios, and her participants are often a blend of professionals and non-trained community members. Melissa’s work explores the use of dance, words, music and film to present a rich multi-layering of images and experiences that capture the diversity and complexity of the human spirit.
“I see myself as the person holding [Angels & Wings], but it will take shape and form as other people’s energy goes into it. I will, with commitment and work, allow it to be created, but I don’t want to control it. Together we’re creating art for a bigger purpose.”

ARToberfest

This week applications are due for participation in ARToberfest 2006!!

Last year there were over 40 artists that participated......
ARToberfest will take place on October 21 and 22 from 2-7 throughout the entire building. The stage will be booked with performers, downstairs will have a gallery show, craft room for families and lots of food, even our parking lot will be buzzing with demonstrations, raffles, booths and food. Did I mention that this is a free event, thanks to a matching grant from the OAC and a very generous anonymos donor!!!

Friday the 13th is the day we will start scheduling the applicants and hanging the art. Pretty ominous, huh?
We are keeping our fingers crossed for great October weather but there is plenty to do inside if our wishes don't come true.
This is a great time to see what your creative Athens neighbors are up to....... (without looking in their windows)
Hope to see you there.
AND STILL MORE
BROADWAY BABYLON presented by Actors Movable Theater will begin performances on October 20, 21 come see this interactive comedy starring some very familiar faces (and voices! ) of Athens..........

Thank you

I want to thank all of our actors, directors, playwrights and especially audiences who participated ARTCO's 1st ANNUAL Humble Pie: Appalachian new play festival. The audience participation in the talk back is vital to the development of a new play and I hope the playwrights found the comments insightful. Athens does me proud! Pictures and October events coming soon!
