Market Sundays

Uptown Advocates Join Forces for the Arts

August 6th 12-4, Market Sundays hosted by Hidden Treasure

With the success of Boogie on the Bricks and the Nelsonville Art and Music Festival, it seems that art and music is in the air in Athens County. On Sunday, August 6th, from 12-4 pm this tradition will continue as Market Sundays – a project of the Athens Municipal Arts Commission will be held in a new location on East State Street between College Street and Court Street in front of Bali Karma, Stephen’s Restaurant and Wild Mercantile. This Sunday the market is hosted by the Hidden Treasures group of specialty retailers located in the northern-end of Uptown Athens.

Market Sunday visitors can visit local retailers, market Sunday vendors and local musicians on this special summer market. Arts displayed range from the very local to the very international. Local artists setting up their wares will be joined by some making art “right on the spot” including a glass blowing demonstration by Sean Fugate and “face-paint masterpieces” for children and adults!

The music will be from our own back yards. Rising star Megan Murphy and her family band Yankee Bluegrass will fill the air with Athens-County-Grown bluegrass in one of her last local performances before she leaves for college in West Virgina where she received a bluegrass scholarship for her excellent mandolin playing. Just returning from the other side of the globe Colin Donohue, will display of sample hand-woven and batik textiles from Java, Lombok, and Sumba in Indonesia, as well as painted eggs from Bali.

Vending fees are very affordable and all interested artists are encouraged to participate.
Market Sunday vendors can contact Leslie Schaller at 592-3854 or to reserve a vending space. All vendors must have a current vendor’s license to participate and only sell home-grown or hand made items. Vendors must bring their own canopies, umbrellas, tables and displays. Please arrive by 11:00 am on the day of the market if you have not reserved with the market organizers.
